     The multimedia case study will tell the story of Goiko Grill; a casual dining restaurant in Spain, with roots from Venezuela. It looks at its exponential rise over a five year period and how keeping strong to a core culture has proved vital in its success.

    The story is told through exclusive interviews with Andoni Goicoechea, the owner and founder, and his journey over the last five years. We also speak to his staff on their experiences during this rapid growth – some moving from waiter to senior leadership in this short period of time.

    There will be separate sections, which will progress chronologically: Starting the company; Scaling and whether to franchise; To sell or not; International/future expansion.

  2. CALVIÁ BEACH MK1-165-I-M

    This multimedia case will be provided to the students after having read a written case, so they will already have a knowledge about the subject, the situation and the position of Meliá in Magaluf.

    The case describes the story of Meliá Hotels International in Magaluf, Mallorca, as a touristic destination that had an extraordinarily fast development. It became a reference destination, due to its climate and privileged environment. It turned into a reference of quality and cost-effectiveness in Spain for decades, driven by hotel investment and tourism in the area.

    However, in the 90s the perception of the area, as a quality tourist destination, decreased and began a period of inflection. These actions led to the fall of prices and margins of hotels.

    Faced with the situation of serious deterioration of the Magaluf area and the declining results of Meliá hotels in the area, Mark Hoddinott knew that they had to make a strategic decision about the positioning of Meliá in that destination. After detailed analyzes, reflections and a wide network of consultations with collaborators, Hoddinott concluded that the best alternative for the company was investing in the area and promoting a strategic repositioning to restart Magaluf as a tourist destination.

    The purpose of this material, is that once the student is aware of the repositioning plan that Meliá decides to make in Magaluf, have all the tools to organize the implementation of this plan, in order to relaunch this tourism destination.

    This Multimedia Case will drive the student through an immersive musical journey along a premium quality hand –made Spanish guitar.  The student will have the opportunity to follow the story of Manuel Rodriguez, a daring entrepreneur. They will be able to follow the companies and generation´s world trip and understand the reasoning behind his actions.

    Using Manuel Rodríguez´s case, students will have the opportunity to put themselves in the position of a serial entrepreneur, constructing their own journey alongside Manuel Rodríguez Guitars. Their decisions and experiences along the multimedia case will get stored digitally, in order to have an open discussion in class.

    Decision-making, drag and drop, and other interactive activities make up the learner journey; these activities are based on tangible entrepreneurial frameworks and business models.

  4. An app you can't refuse SI1-153-I-M

    This multimedia case describes the situation of BigBangBox, a startup that creates edutainment apps. It shows the strategy followed by them in the launch of previous products. It also offers the necessary information about the markets of apps, to understand the importance of selecting the right strategy, with the business model and the promotion as keys to success.

    After analyzing the new app, Mafia Business School, the student can decide the strategy for its launch. The student will have the opportunity of selecting an adequate business model and levels of promotion through the use of a simulator.

    The case includes the participation of the founders, who tell the story of BigBangBox as a startup and confront the students with the dilemma of the launch of Mafia Business School. It is narrated through a comic, also known as a graphic story. It has a modern and functional design, including resources provided by the company to make the case more entertaining and fun.

    The case study is mainly geared towards MBA and Master in International Management students. It can work in courses like Information Systems and IT & Innovation but also in Marketing and Strategy to show specific cases having to do with the world of apps, games and mobile devices. It can also be useful for students who are taking electives that have to do with digital marketing, mobile, digital business models, digital products or something similar as well as professionals in information systems and technology, marketing and digital communication programs.

  5. Because there is no planet B: the case of Ecoalf DE1-226-I

    The case is about ECOALF, a Spanish sustainable fashion brand that manufactures garments, sneakers and accessories from recycled materials. By providing information on ECOALF’s products and initiatives, while simultaneously illustrating the difficulty of balancing social and financial goals, this case introduces an interesting real-world setting that touches upon various issues related to social innovation, entrepreneurship, strategy, CSR and ethics. Particularly, the case offers insights on the delicate phase in the growth of a firm in which the sales are booming and the company is expanding, while the company still does not make a profit and its long-term continuity is still uncertain.

    The case confronts students with questions such as ‘What strategic decisions should be made to ensure ECOALF’s long-term profitability?’ and ‘How should social and financial objectives be balanced?’, and allows them to explore these questions using a real company and market information.

  6. El Confidencial: leading the digital revolution of t … DE1-227-I

    El Confidencial is an example of how a young company can become the leader in an industry undergoing a transformation. The case describes the changes in technology and consumer habits that occurred with the digitalization of the newspaper industry. This has resulted in financial hardship for traditional newspapers as their model based on print newspapers fades away. 

    First, the case explores the industry by describing what success traditionally looked like and how it has evolved with the digitalization of the industry.


    Second, it explores the emergence of new digital “native” competitors and how they have managed to gain a high level of readership and influence over public opinion in a short period of time. This has redesigned the map of mass media establishing new positions of leadership, such as that of El Confidencial.


    Told in chronological order, the case explains the evolution of El Confidential starting with its foundation in 2001. The reader tracks how it faced its main challenges and achieved success.

  7. Jane joins the club: Diversity & corporate gove … CO1-280-I

    How to make an effective contribution to a closely-knit board run by a longtime and rigid chair, and how to do so as the only woman? This is the predicament this fictional case study presents Jane Pruitt, a 54-year-old CFO coming in from another company under shareholder pressure. She is striving to make a much-needed impact on a privately-held formerly family-run metalworking machinery and equipment manufacturer overseen by five male board members (and financially interconnected friends) all about 70 years of age.
    Jane begins to suspect that the intellectual, generational and gender diversity she was hired to provide was brought on board only for public show.

    The case raises important questions about the value of diversity in a team environment and will engage any student who has been an outsider on an insular, club-like team.

    This case presents several challenges that are relevant for organizations today. First, it explores a newcomer’s perspective on being an outsider in an insider-dominated setting. Second, the case presents a number of common board/team practices that undercut effectiveness. Finally, it gives students the opportunity to think and talk about board diversity, its merits and challenges, and possible paths forward to success.

    Within that setting, several instructional objectives can be met:

    • Diversity: The experience of the outsider, and the deep frustrations of not fitting in.
    • Board Process: Board effectiveness requires both the right board composition and the right board process.
    • Leadership: The next leader is often already at the table but may not match the stereotype of the old one.

ABB & Galindo brings up the dilemma of Esther, Human Resources director at the factory, when she is faced with the transition of a factory into a service center. This meant either relocating, retraining or letting go most if not all of the current workers, with the additional complication that even after the official announcement the factory still had to run for another 18 months.
