Case Study
Description
This multimedia case helps students understand the informational value of the statement of cash flows. Using data from three real airline companies (which have been disguised) that follow IFRS and US GAAP reporting, the indirect and direct formats are explored. A detailed analysis of the statements of cash flows stimulates the discussion of the operating, investing, and financing of these three companies in different financial situations. After completing the detailed analysis, the students vote on the likelihood of each company declaring bankruptcy. The outcome of the voting shows the power of the statement of cash flows, as the students can correctly forecast the impending bankruptcy of one of the companies.
