  3. The Housing Market in Spain EC1-138-I-M

    Have house prices stopped falling? What is their natural resting place? The Housing Market in Spain provides a framework for analyzing and predicting house prices. The case study focusses on Spain, however, the analysis can be extrapolated to other countries. Students are presented with different information across six steps. In each step they must make a prediction, modifying their previous decision according to their analysis of the new information. The case takes a look at such topics as speculative bubbles, income trends, disposable income and income elasticity of demand.

    A dedicated professor’s page, designed to be shown in the class session, allows for a full analysis of decisions in each of the steps. As well as seeing the tendency of the predictions for the whole class, the professor can highlight a specific student’s analysis and use this to encourage class discussion.

  4. Ethiopia: Life at the base of the pyramid EC1-132-I-M

    This multimedia case tells the story of three groups of IE International MBA students who embarked on volunteer and research projects in Ethiopia. The first phase involved students staying and working in an NGO in Dilla whilst researching the three pillars of poverty: health nutrition and education. The second stage will look at the opportunities to do business in Ethiopia and the final phase plans to focus on attracting foreign investment to the country.

    The students' experiences are brought to life through images and video interviews. The conclusion section for the first phase considers whether NGOs can solve the problems in Ethiopia and possible solutions to the poverty trap.

  5. Introducción al Análisis Financiero a través de Rati … CF2-109-M

    Interactive technical note comprising a quiz and an exercise focusing on analyzing the ratios once they have been calculated.

    Using the hotel industry in general and the company NH in particular, students learn how to handle the basic ratios and perform a financial analysis. The exercises are self-corrected: the quiz is a web form and the final questionnaire is an Excel page which the students have to complete and then make a comparison with the competitor Sol Meliá.

    Furthermore, the case includes a glossary with definitions and formulas, a pyramid that classifies the ratios used, and a series of specific ratios used on this particular industry.

The case focuses on how this important studio, which was well-known for having a closely knit, employee-orientated culture, managed this process. The case begins with an introduction to the studio before moving on to hear the reasons of the partners for having to make redundancies. The final section of the case includes an interactive exercise in which students must make recommendations about how the company should manage the process. A dedicated professor's page, which can be shown in class, analyzes the results of the student exercise and also includes a full reaction to the process through various video interviews with employees.

    This case lies within the field of Human Resources Management and is fit to be used in such courses across all kinds of postgraduate programs. To date, it has been used successfully in MBA, Executive MBA, Executive Education courses and other management programs.

  8. Valoración de empresas, un enfoque gráfico DF2-221-M

    This interactive tutorial describes in a very simple manner the four valuation methods: accounting method liquidation method discounting of cash flows and ratios. Using animations and graphs it shows what each of these methods measures focusing on the balance sheet.

    The last section of this tutorial is an exercise where students have to apply the four valuation methods for a fictitious company. The objective is for them to see a graphical comparison of the different values obtained under each one of the methods.

    This tutorial has been used successfully in undergraduate, graduate (in particular MBA, Masters in Finance and Masters in Management courses) and executive education level finance courses, both in online/blended and face-to-face formats.

  9. Sownage: Ciberseguridad y Continuidad Empresarial SI1-139-M

    The case details events from April to June 2011 when an attack on the PlayStation Network (PSN) occurred. As a consequence of this incident the PSN systems shut down and personal information about users was stolen by hackers. Students will analyze the facts and then present action paths putting themselves in the role of a PlayStation team member in charge of the situation. They will also need to develop a business continuity plan for the future.

    The case has been developed as a simple multimedia tool with the information organized according to the different stakeholders and through a timeline of the attack. In addition to texts and images each chapter has a number of links that students can visit to delve deeper into their analysis.

    This case study is designed to be used at various levels. Versions of this case have been used at the, pre-experience MBA, the MBA, and the Executive MBA, and a blended Global MBA in the session dedicated to information security management.
