Mr. Pudgemonth is a financial investor who wants to move from Belgium to Spain, specifically to Catalonia. However, he is unfamiliar with the existing territorial model in Spain and the political problems that this Spanish region is currently facing. He turns to IE Law students for legal advice on the possibility of moving to Catalonia, but not before learning a little more about the Spanish territorial model and its current problems.

The aim of this case study is for students to become familiar with the different models of territorial distribution of power (forms of state) and to be able to distinguish between the main existing models in comparative law: federal, regional and unitary states (both decentralised and strongly centralised models).

In addition, the aim is also to provide students with a deeper understanding of the so-called right of peoples to decide and the possibility of self-determination and independence of the peoples in today's democracies, as well as its real effectiveness.

An English citizen who was an IE University student has founded a start-up in Spain. She wants to expand her business to the UK, however, she is not very familiar with the process of the UK's exit from the European Union (already definitively implemented in 2021) and its main consequences. So, she asks her university colleagues on her LLB degree for legal advice on the pros and cons of the BREXIT process and how it would affect her business from a legal point of view.

Through this case study, students will learn about the constitutional process of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (AKA BREXIT), and its main consequences. Students will also analyse the pros and cons of such a decision.

The so-called sovereignty of the UK Parliament will also be studied, and the existence or not of popular sovereignty will be debated too.

They will also analyse the consequences of holding a referendum in the UK.
