World Case Teaching Day 2024

World Case Teaching Day 2024

A day to recognize all the professionals and institutions contributing to the case method

Today we celebrate World Case Teaching Day, a very special day created by The Case Centre to acknowledge the benefits of case studies and the case method. As a pioneer in the creation and distribution of such materials, IE University Publishing is proud to join this celebration.

The case method is a learning methodology based on the analysis and discussion of real-life situations. This technique has been applied at IE University for years, teaching students to express opinions, reason, debate, and defend their solutions coherently; it allows students to learn from professors and peers alike while working through practical cases in which they can apply new knowledge to realistic scenarios. Furthermore, the case method enhances critical judgment, reflection, decision-making skills, and students’ diagnostic abilities.

At IE University Publishing, we have been developing case studies for more than 20 years. Our team has grown over time, yet we have maintained an unwavering commitment to remain at the forefront of education while innovating in our selection of case study topics and the formats in which we present them.

In celebration of this day, we want to share more about the process of creating multimedia case studies and how the people responsible for this work within our department operate.

Multimedia case studies give students the opportunity to interact with content in various formats, including video interviews, dramatizations, dynamic graphics, and assessments with immediate feedback. The production of a case study involves a diverse range of professionals, including instructional designers, project managers, web developers, audiovisual producers, and graphic designers.

A case study is the result of a five-phase process:

1. Definition

The first step is to identify the subject area, topic, learning objectives, and the key dilemmas students will face in the case study.

2. Structure

The next step is to structure the content, decide on the formats in which the content will be presented, and define a storytelling narrative.

3. Storyboard

Pedagogical content and scripts for recording are then developed, along with the web navigation and interactivity.

4. Production

The case study comes to life at this stage, when back-end and front-end developers, graphic designers, and audiovisual producers give the material a distinct look and feel.

5. Quality control

Finally, before launch, the material is reviewed according to specific criteria for technical usability as well as to correct any errors in language and expression to ensure that the case study meets IE University's quality requirements.

Once this process is complete, the case study is ready for students to use as part of their curriculum.

"Creating a case study is a complex process that involves the work of many professionals. At IE University Publishing, we focus on pedagogical quality, but we also aim to connect with the student through storytelling to create relevant content that sparks their interest and that they will remember in the long term."

Cynthia Bowles - Executive Director of IE University Publishing
