The story is told through exclusive interviews with Andoni Goicoechea, the owner and founder, and his journey over the last five years. We also speak to his staff on their experiences during this rapid growth – some moving from waiter to senior leadership in this short period of time.

El Confidencial is an example of how a young company can become the leader in an industry undergoing a transformation. The case describes the changes in technology and consumer habits that occurred with the digitalization of the newspaper industry. This has resulted in financial hardship for traditional newspapers as their model based on print newspapers fades away.
First, the case explores the industry by describing what success traditionally looked like and how it has evolved with the digitalization of the industry.
Second, it explores the emergence of new digital “native” competitors and how they have managed to gain a high level of readership and influence over public opinion in a short period of time. This has redesigned the map of mass media establishing new positions of leadership, such as that of El Confidencial.

Donostia-San Sebastían: A City in Search of Talent a … GE1-142-I
The case describes the story of a city, Donostia-San Sebastián, which has the political and institutional goal to become a city of innovation and entrepreneurship. To achieve this, there are different dilemmas related to the size of the city, the shortage of talent in certain specialties, cannibalization of talent, internationally competitive salaries and the effects of the brain drain. In this case study, we meet a local public institution, Fomento San Sebastián (FSS), which acts as the instrument of the city to promote an intelligent, sustainable and inclusive local economic development. FSS plays a fundamental role within the local ecosystem of innovation and takes the lead to endow talent with human capital in the city.
Through the context of the city of Donostia-San Sebastián and the different programs and decisions taken by FSS, the student will be able to understand the innovation ecosystem and to analyze how talent and human capital develops in a city.

The case follows the implementation of ABB´s decision to restructure its operations in Spain and close the manufacturing line at its Galindo factory in the Basque Country. ABB was required to enter into formal negotiations with its workers towards a Labor Force Reduction Procedure (ERE). The workers at Galindo strongly objected to ABB´s restructuring proposals and were not placated by the company´s generous offers of compensation and employee retraining. The workers employed a number of strategies to derail the ERE including appealing to local politicians and engaging in public protests. The ‘Instituto Beleza Natural’ opened its first center in 1993, in Brazil. Over the course of 18 years BN has managed to transform itself into a very successful business with 11 beauty centers nationwide, more than 80,000 clients per month, annual revenues exceeding 60 million US dollars and with a workforce of over 1,300 employees. Beleza Natural (BN) has become very popular in Rio de Janeiro over the 2000 decade and is known as a beauty salon that caters to women who have a low income with high quality products that are scarce in their range, since BN applies an innovative treatment that transforms fizzy curly hair into softer and more moisturized hair whilst creating beautifully defined curls. And although BN seemed successful and with great potential, BN faces many open questions by the middle of 2011. In this case students are challenged to identify, analyze and resolve some of the challenges that the promotion of entrepreneurship faces in emerging economies; to develop innovative ways of thinking about existent public and private support that are often unnoticed; and build financial strength beyond conventional approaches.Academic Area:Entrepreneurship

This interactive multimedia case describes the crisis that surrounded the sale of the Galletas Fontaneda biscuit factory in 2002. United Biscuit's announcement to sell the factory was the beginning of a seven month conflict that would affect the employees its managers and residents of the town of Aguilar de Campoo.
The case is based around an interactive timeline which allows students to consider the main events of the crisis in detail. For each of the milestones interviews with the president of United Biscuits the head of the worker's council and the mayor of Aguilar de Campoo provide analysis.Academic Area:Human Resources | Negotiation
Galletas Fontaneda and United Biscuits RH1-120-I
This case is about how a small town joined together and fought to keep a biscuit factory open that was deeply rooted in their community. The biscuit factory Fontaneda (United Biscuits) did not just provide jobs for many of the locals in Aguilar de Campoo (Spain), the community also relied on it for things like building a school or bus stop. However, the factory operated at only 30 percent capacity, leading them to announce the transfer of all workers and the closure of the factory in 2002. This led to a crisis with lots of backlash and a major confrontation between the workers, citizens and the multinational, which became a public relations disaster for the company. Politicians and union leaders also stepped in, mobilizing against the closing. The case walks readers through the seven months of negotiations between the parties and describes how the crisis was managed. Eventually, the factory was sold to Siro, excluding the brand, and workers were given options to move to another United Biscuits plant, to retire early or to work under Siro. Although there were tough moments during the negotiation process, this was seen as a victory by the union headquarters, and during 2002 and 2003, United Biscuits strongly exceeded its financial performance.Academic Area:Human Resources | Negotiation
