The case describes the story of a city, Donostia-San Sebastián, which has the political and institutional goal to become a city of innovation and entrepreneurship. To achieve this, there are different dilemmas related to the size of the city, the shortage of talent in certain specialties, cannibalization of talent, internationally competitive salaries and the effects of the brain drain. In this case study, we meet a local public institution, Fomento San Sebastián (FSS), which acts as the instrument of the city to promote an intelligent, sustainable and inclusive local economic development. FSS plays a fundamental role within the local ecosystem of innovation and takes the lead to endow talent with human capital in the city.
Through the context of the city of Donostia-San Sebastián and the different programs and decisions taken by FSS, the student will be able to understand the innovation ecosystem and to analyze how talent and human capital develops in a city.

This multimedia case describes the situation of BigBangBox, a startup that creates edutainment apps. It shows the strategy followed by them in the launch of previous products. It also offers the necessary information about the markets of apps, to understand the importance of selecting the right strategy, with the business model and the promotion as keys to success.
After analyzing the new app, Mafia Business School, the student can decide the strategy for its launch. The student will have the opportunity of selecting an adequate business model and levels of promotion through the use of a simulator.
The case includes the participation of the founders, who tell the story of BigBangBox as a startup and confront the students with the dilemma of the launch of Mafia Business School. It is narrated through a comic, also known as a graphic story. It has a modern and functional design, including resources provided by the company to make the case more entertaining and fun.
The case study is mainly geared towards MBA and Master in International Management students. It can work in courses like Information Systems and IT & Innovation but also in Marketing and Strategy to show specific cases having to do with the world of apps, games and mobile devices. Pedro, a young industrial engineer, had just earned his MBA and landed a job at Innovaciones Metalúrgicas S.A., a top engineering consulting firm. His manager Marta, a very intelligent woman and an excellent manager, gave him the tasks of working alone on a difficult set of technical problems they were finding in nickel and tungsten alloys and to attend and contribute to the weekly coordination meetings to the best of his ability. Pedro ended up proposing four potential improvements to Marta in a span of nine months. Marta carefully analyzed each of his proposals. She rejected the first one on the basis of a number of excellent technical arguments. She also rejected the second one because it would be too rigid and time-consuming. Marta thought his third proposal could work but that it had some weaknesses that needed to be dealt with. For his fourth proposal, he decided to focus on something that was technical in nature since that was his expertise. But it wouldn’t work either. Since he had worked so hard on the proposals, he felt very discouraged and disappointed. One the one hand, he acknowledged that Marta was an excellent professional and knew that her decisions were fair. On the other hand, he was very upset because Marta never praised his efforts and focused on the weaknesses in his proposals without any positive feedback. Her managerial style was causing him to lose his enthusiasm and motivation and he was also upset with his colleagues for criticizing him. The case describes the creation and growth process of a company of the so called shared economy with a platform business model, which was potentially disruptive for the hotel industry. Using the setting of the Airbnb entry in Spain and the response of the hotel industry, the case looks in detail at the nature of the business model of a sharing economy firm and the challenges its advancement posed for the industry.
The case provides insights into some of the different parts of Airbnb's business model: how it creates and captures value, how a company with fewer resources is able to compete and overcome its rivals and threaten a powerful industry, when the success of its business is based on the trust of its users because the company does not guarantee safety.

The closing of elBulli as a restaurant on 30 July, 2011 gave rise to a new milestone - the creation of a new organisation, elBullifoundation - which emerges as a universe for the generation of creativity. The goal is to design the project as a stellar space for knowledge within the new cooking paradigm for the coming decades. Revolving around creativity, the space is both integrating and interdisciplinary, given that the creative process is connected to philosophical reflection, the arts, science, practice and technology.
This case explores the transition of the successful haute couture restaurant, ElBulli, into an innovation centre based on digital technology, called the elBullifoundation. This case study tells the story of the gourmet olive oil company Castillo de Canena highlighting the professional career developments of its protagonists. It focuses on Rosa Vañó who just before her 40th birthday left an executive role at Coca-Cola to manage a new family business line in the olive oil company with her brother. She had given up what promised to be a brilliant career to take up a new professional challenge in a small company that is fast becoming her personal dream. It shows the dilemmas of such a decision and details the first successes and failures.
The case puts the student into the picture with graphs and audiovisuals in depth interviews of the transformation of the company the people and their future challenges. It also includes the description of the strategy formulation process followed by the Vañó siblings as well as of their first strategic plan. It concludes with Rosa and Francisco Vañó reflecting on the future of the company. The economic crisis and the proliferation of new products have made it more difficult to achieve success through a differentiation strategy. In this context they have received an offer to buy the company which has both strategic and personal implications: Should they sell the company? Should they make the career shift from owners to managers?
This case study can be taught as part of core MBA subjects like Organizational Behavior about career management and career transition.
