This case is about a recent graduate who has to make a decision about whether or not he wants to work with his father running a family business. After studying engineering, he got a job at an oil and gas company and worked his way up the ladder. But when the oil crisis hit, he was laid off and had to look for work in an industry that was no longer hiring. He finally found a new job but he was unhappy and decided to do an MBA at IE. The case first gives background information on the father and explains how he worked really hard to make his company successful. It emphasizes that the father and son have very different professional backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses. It then goes into the father’s toxic behaviors by providing examples from the student’s past experiences with him. Then, it provides cases where details are given about different situations where the student and father got into disagreements and how the disagreements were handled. Each case shows a different scenario: the father exercising poor judgment and a lack of understanding while the student is composed and level-headed; the student acting poorly and the father keeping composed and level-headed; and the father and son working well together. Each case provides an analysis and things that they could have done better. After the case examples, the student explains coping methods he uses with his father and ponders how things might turn out if they work together. The student concludes by stating, “If I do join the family business, my strategy is to adjust my work style to his very heavily in the short term. I will push for a “meet in the middle” kind of style. I will periodically asses our progress and our behavior as the partnership matures. After analyzing the new app, Mafia Business School, the student can decide the strategy for its launch. The student will have the opportunity of selecting an adequate business model and levels of promotion through the use of a simulator.
The case includes the participation of the founders, who tell the story of BigBangBox as a startup and confront the students with the dilemma of the launch of Mafia Business School. It is narrated through a comic, also known as a graphic story. It has a modern and functional design, including resources provided by the company to make the case more entertaining and fun.

This case describes the internationalization strategy of the law firm Ontier. Its international value proposition lies in offering its clients the best local legal knowledge as well as a uniform, quality service in all the countries where it has a presence. This value proposition is different than that offered by Spanish law firms, which typically use a network of alliances with local firms to offer their clients the best local legal knowledge. However, the quality of their services is not always uniform in all countries. This case study describes how using a joint venture entry mode helped the company achieve its value proposition and how implementing this strategy required changes in management systems and the company’s structure.
This case study was designed to promote discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of the different entry modes within an “international strategy” or “corporate strategy” module where other related cases are also discussed. However, business works differently in practice. Markets demand competition and strategic change. Operating systems should be adapted to new strategic needs. Even in situations where strategic and competitive framework is reasonably stable (where the convenience or otherwise making of changes in a coherently designed and well managed operating system could be questioned), demand does not usually remain stable in the course of time.”

This case study tells the story of the gourmet olive oil company Castillo de Canena highlighting the professional career developments of its protagonists. It focuses on Rosa Vañó who just before her 40th birthday left an executive role at Coca-Cola to manage a new family business line in the olive oil company with her brother. She had given up what promised to be a brilliant career to take up a new professional challenge in a small company that is fast becoming her personal dream. It shows the dilemmas of such a decision and details the first successes and failures.
The case puts the student into the picture with graphs and audiovisuals in depth interviews of the transformation of the company the people and their future challenges. It also includes the description of the strategy formulation process followed by the Vañó siblings as well as of their first strategic plan. It concludes with Rosa and Francisco Vañó reflecting on the future of the company. The economic crisis and the proliferation of new products have made it more difficult to achieve success through a differentiation strategy. In this context they have received an offer to buy the company which has both strategic and personal implications: Should they sell the company? Should they make the career shift from owners to managers?
This case study can be taught as part of core MBA subjects like Organizational Behavior about career management and career transition. This case introduces students to the complex drama of international climate policy negotiations. In 2008, the EU decided to include the aviation industry in its emissions trading system (ETS), beginning in 2012. The policy puts China, the US and the EU on a collision course that could end in a trade war. The policy can be seen as a clever and/or heavy-handed way of negotiating climate change policies with countries outside of the EU, notably the United States and China. Furthermore, it has indirect effects on a variety of related and supporting industries, including airline manufacturers. In both cases, firms are caught in a complex intergovernmental bargaining game in which they have to make a series of strategic choices about shaping and responding to potential outcomes.
The goal of the case is to teach students to break down and analyze complex situations involving business, government and society. They should be able to understand the causes of this policy, the relationship between firms and governments in different contexts and the consequences of this particular policy for airlines as well as related and supporting industries. Students should also be able to develop plans for firms involved in the dispute, including market and non-market responses to block or adjust to the policy. The case gives students the chance to practice lobbying and exposes them to strategic interaction at multiple levels. Because the bargaining between governments resembles a game of chicken, instructors may choose to use game theoretic terms and logic.Academic Area:Strategy
XP Oil Corporation in the Orinoquia Region NG1-118-I
XP Oil Corporation (XP) won the bid for building an oil pipeline for natural gas in the Orinoquia region of Colombia. According to previous experiences, the bottleneck for the construction was the delay in negotiating easements (rights to pass through the land) with the farmers and ranchers. Huge amounts of petroleum had been discovered in the region during the 1990s but the company was new to the region. Other international companies had some years of experience with this type of negotiations, not only for building pipelines but also for prospecting geological studies, purchasing land for oil drilling and building roads and electric lines. XP carefully selected and hired fifteen experienced professionals for a team of land easement negotiations and was facing the challenge of setting negotiation policies and guiding the group. A hired consultant conducted personal interviews with the team members. The case is a summary of his notes and perceptions about the negotiation culture in the region, as well as possible ways to deal with them.
