  6. Carrera y Carrera: Glamour arrives to ERP SI1-123-I

    The case examines the history of Carrera y Carrera (CYC), a Spanish company of artisan jewelers founded in 1885 which was faced with the dilemma of implementing an ERP system to cope with the growth and internationalization of their business. At that time, the company had gone through a phase of change having being bought by a group of investors led by another Spanish multinational, Lladró, and by the venture capital company 3i.

    Given the high number of small Spanish companies, in traditional sectors, which face challenges arising from their internationalization, and using the three stages of the implementation process of an ERP system (selection, implementation and post-implementation) as a tool, the purpose of the case is to analyze the Axapta ERP implementation process and the factors contributing to the success of this implementation through the analysis of the experience of CYC during the period in which this process was carried out.   

    To do this, it will first be a matter of analyzing what the variables were that influenced the process of selection and subsequent implementation of ERP. Given that this competitive success is something dynamic that changes with time, it is necessary to also look at what challenges the company is faced with today and what strategies it ought to adopt in order to consolidate and increase growth both of the business and of the systems that support the strategy and the business.

    Between 1992 and 2005, Banesco Banco Universal experienced sustainable and inexorable growth within Venezuela’s complex financial and banking market. Venezuela had weathered several political, social and economic crises over the last fifteen years. The vision of its founders Juan Carlos Escotet and Luis Xavier Lujan had been a key driver for the Bank’s success. However, after thirteen years of good decisions and results, Banesco was now a large and complex organization and was starting to show certain weaknesses that needed to be addressed by reviewing management and innovation processes to date. 

    In 2005, the Bank was in a situation in which it was able to launch a number of initiatives and projects designed to leverage strategic objectives. The demand for projects, however, was bigger than the Bank’s capacity to implement them, and it did not seem capable of prioritizing them.

    On May 20th 2005 Delphine, product manager forVichy’s French subsidiary perhaps had one of her worst days professionally speaking. She had to present public apologies to her clients for the false blog created due to the launching of a new anti-aging cosmetic product.

    Soon, it became a scandal of mass proportions and it appeared on main French newspapers.  This is why the top management ofVichyFrancehad to make plans for a response strategy.  The question now was to know if they should act nationwide using traditional communication methods or new methods. Or simply just let some time go by for the problem to be forgotten.
