This case reveals the importance of business analytics and process data to nurture organizational excellence and continuous operational improvement. The organization in focus is a paradigmatic example of a data-driven health care organization with outstanding worldwide levels of excellence. In 2005, the organization faced various challenges: it was increasingly difficult to improve donation rates (due to fewer traffic accidents and aging population) and the system exhibited large variations in observed performance (some hospitals could not replicate other’s ability to find donors). In contrast to manufacturing contexts or simpler service deliveries in the case of organ donation and transplant, the appraisal of performance is complex and subjective as (1) some factors are not controllable (e.g., patient’s age, medical background, relative’s propensity to consent) and (2) some processes are not fully observable (e.g., surgeon deciding not to accept an organ, judge not allowing a donation to take place). As a result, performance metrics are hard to define and realize in practice.

As a consequence of this incident the PSN systems shut down and personal information about users was stolen by hackers. Students will analyze the facts and then present action paths putting themselves in the role of a PlayStation team member in charge of the situation. They will also need to develop a business continuity plan for the future.
The case has been developed as a simple multimedia tool with the information organized according to the different stakeholders and through a timeline of the attack. In addition to texts and images each chapter has a number of links that students can visit to delve deeper into their analysis.

Faced with the challenge of improving both sales and profitability of Bogota, Colombia’s 5-star Hotel Ipsum, General Manager Rafael Escobedo had to take into consideration the political, social, economic and technological factors working for and against him. A customer base principally traveling for business and higher room occupancy during the week than weekends coupled with a virtually non-existent marketing plan was the primary obstacle standing between Escobedo and achieving higher profitability for Hotel Ipsum. In order to do so, radical changes would have to be made in order to keep the hotel, and his job, from being negatively affected.
