    The case describes the story of a city, Donostia-San Sebastián, which has the political and institutional goal to become a city of innovation and entrepreneurship. To achieve this, there are different dilemmas related to the size of the city, the shortage of talent in certain specialties, cannibalization of talent, internationally competitive salaries and the effects of the brain drain. In this case study, we meet a local public institution, Fomento San Sebastián (FSS), which acts as the instrument of the city to promote an intelligent, sustainable and inclusive local economic development. FSS plays a fundamental role within the local ecosystem of innovation and takes the lead to endow talent with human capital in the city.

    Through the context of the city of Donostia-San Sebastián and the different programs and decisions taken by FSS, the student will be able to understand the innovation ecosystem and to analyze how talent and human capital develops in a city.

    This case is useful for a wide audience:

    1. Students of universities, MBA or MIR interested in innovation in cities.
    2. University students of science, technology, engineering and mathematics interested in the topic.
    3. Students participating in courses such as Urban Innovation, Public Policy, Sustainable Cities, Human Resources, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

    During the case, different questions arise: the name "Tortilla" (of potatoes?), the communication model, the distribution strategy, pricing and promo strategy, all this together or separately from Pringles potatoes?

    It has been created for use in undergraduate and graduate programs (MBA, MIM, and Executive MBA) within Marketing and Communication sessions. A preliminary knowledge on the 4 P´s of marketing is needed.

During two years, she and her team develop a pawn service that complies with Islamic banking principles - finally offering lower-middle-class individuals the opportunity to borrow money more securely.

This material explains how BBVA reacted to the disruption of its micro-payment business caused by the entrance of large multinationals from outside the banking industry.

    Secunda is Prima’s employee and a dentist in one of Prima’s dental clinics. Secunda and Prima are going to open a new clinic together in Spain under a new Sociedad Anónima. They have mistakenly made investments on account of the new company. Leasing over equipment has been entered into with a third party, for equipment to be used in the clinic.

    The students are asked to regularise this de facto situation with a long-term solution. Furthermore, the relationship of both parties as partners must be regulated, and in particular, Secunda’s dual role as a dentist and director.

    What is it like to live and do business at the base of the pyramid? This multimedia is the second part in a series of reports from students who have spent time living, working and volunteering in Ethiopia.

    This installment focuses on the different types of businesses that exist and operate in the East African country and begins to explore both the opportunities and challenges that business owners face. Here we display the first-hand accounts from those who have spent time in large and small companies and can relay the challenges of doing business in the bottom of the pyramid.

    The students´ experiences are brought to life through images and video interviews. The conclusion posing the ultimate question: Can money be made doing business at the bottom of the pyramid?

  8. Jordan's Sovereign Sukuk: A dual solution to bo … DF1-221-I

    The Sukuk sector is the fastest growing sector of the Islamic Finance Industry. Indeed, it grew by 14% within just one year (between 2014 and 2015). The total outstanding Sukuk globally stood at US$ 342 billion at the end of 2015. Sukuk has been widely embraced globally as Sovereign Sukuk has been issued by various countries such as UK, Malaysia, Hong-Kong and South Africa. Supranational entities such as World Bank affiliates International Finance Facility for Immunization (IFFI), the Islamic Development Bank Group and even companies such as Dubai Islamic Bank, Goldman Sachs and Zorly Energy have all issued Sukuk.

    The Jordan Sovereign Sukuk transaction was the pioneer Sovereign Sukuk issuance by the country. Jordan, which is one of ICD’s member countries, has been very active for the past couple of years in terms of Islamic Finance regulations and framework given that it has four Islamic banks in operation in Jordan and passed the Islamic Finance Sukuk Law in 2012.

  9. Country Investment Decision EC2-103-M

    Country Investment Decision is an interactive exercise in which students adopt the role of an International Fund Advisor. Students must study the data available about different countries in order to prioritize the investment options and make a final investment proposal.

    The exercise is designed so that different data sets of real countries are firstly considered individually before all the data together is taken into account to make a final proposal. The topics covered are economic indicator data, institutional data, and finally social and political risk data. At each decision stage, the student must justify their choices. A professor’s page displays graphically the evolution of decisions.
