    What happens when a multinational from another sector launches an innovative service which competes directly with your offerings? This material explains how BBVA reacted to the disruption of its micro-payment business caused by the entrance of large multinationals from outside the banking industry.

    The rapid acceptance of technologies by consumers offers an opportunity to meet a growing demand for new services. Many companies attracted by these business opportunities are placing greater importance on innovation pushing it to the forefront of their structure.

    Most commonly it is companies within the same sector that compete amongst one another to launch new services however sometimes the disruptive came from another sector which launches an innovative service which competes directly with your offerings.

  3. Country Investment Decision EC2-103-M

    Country Investment Decision is an interactive exercise in which students adopt the role of an International Fund Advisor. Students must study the data available about different countries in order to prioritize the investment options and make a final investment proposal.

    The exercise is designed so that different data sets of real countries are firstly considered individually before all the data together is taken into account to make a final proposal. The topics covered are economic indicator data, institutional data, and finally social and political risk data. At each decision stage, the student must justify their choices. A professor’s page displays graphically the evolution of decisions.

    * This material will have personalized links for each student and the professor will have the ability to see individual and aggregate responses before and during the class session.

  4. Caso Japón EC1-134-M

    This interactive case study combines data that is publicly available in Google Data with questions for the students so they can reflect on the policies of Japan that affect their economic development.

    The idea is that students can understand the liquidity trap (how low interest rates end up making the monetary policy useless), what can be expected of growth when it is based on debt, some of the structural limits to growth (like aging population and technology) and the importance of political stability in the growth process.

    The context for the case is a meeting where the finance ministry of Japan calls on the class (who role play as consultants) to help them understand the situation. The information offered includes embedded content from google data that the students can navigate through different graphs organized to depict many of the main economic variables and relevant relations between them, and is combined with research questions to ensure active student participation. It also has a professor's page that will include additional information on several events related to social, economic and political events that affect the aforementioned variables, as well as a place to display the student's answers, that may be hand-picked if desired.

    An advantage of using Google Data for this case is the fact that the information is kept permanently up-to-date

    The trend of people reading on paper is decreasing whilst the trend for reading online is increasing. This multimedia case explains how Vocento reacted to the shift of consumers from traditional media to online media and the significant reduction in income that this initially brought about. It discusses how the company was able to solve this issue by analysing data from its users in order to better understand their habits. With this information Vocento was able to make business decisions that have positioned the company as a leader in the field of online communication. The multimedia case separates the analysis of this experience into five stages from the initial detection of the problem through to finding a solution and measuring the impact on the business.

    This case has been designed to be used in undergraduate, graduate (MBA programs and Master in Management programs), Executive MBA and executive education, in courses such as Information Systems and Technology, Technology and Information Management, Digital Transformation, and Digital Innovation.

  6. Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners RH1-147-M

    This interactive multimedia case describes the story of the redundancy process carried out by the architectural studio, Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners, at the beginning of 2009. The case focuses on how this important studio, which was well-known for having a closely knit, employee-orientated culture, managed this process. The case begins with an introduction to the studio before moving on to hear the reasons of the partners for having to make redundancies. The final section of the case includes an interactive exercise in which students must make recommendations about how the company should manage the process. A dedicated professor's page, which can be shown in class, analyzes the results of the student exercise and also includes a full reaction to the process through various video interviews with employees.

    This case lies within the field of Human Resources Management and is fit to be used in such courses across all kinds of postgraduate programs. To date, it has been used successfully in MBA, Executive MBA, Executive Education courses and other management programs.

  7. Rosa Vañó y Castillo de Canena CO1-259-M

    This case study tells the story of the gourmet olive oil company Castillo de Canena highlighting the professional career developments of its protagonists. It focuses on Rosa Vañó who just before her 40th birthday left an executive role at Coca-Cola to manage a new family business line in the olive oil company with her brother. She had given up what promised to be a brilliant career to take up a new professional challenge in a small company that is fast becoming her personal dream. It shows the dilemmas of such a decision and details the first successes and failures.

    The case puts the student into the picture with graphs and audiovisuals in depth interviews of the transformation of the company the people and their future challenges. It also includes the description of the strategy formulation process followed by the Vañó siblings as well as of their first strategic plan. It concludes with Rosa and Francisco Vañó reflecting on the future of the company. The economic crisis and the proliferation of new products have made it more difficult to achieve success through a differentiation strategy. In this context they have received an offer to buy the company which has both strategic and personal implications: Should they sell the company? Should they make the career shift from owners to managers?

    This case study can be taught as part of core MBA subjects like Organizational Behavior about career management and career transition. The case has been particularly useful in Organizational Behavior modules designed for experienced audiences, since they are more likely to be receptive to the career transition story described in the case.

    Students are able to complete different tests about personal and work satisfaction and get firsthand insight into coaching and the selection process from a happiness perspective. It is possible to relate R's HR management model with their own work life.

    This case is organized through a timeline with video interviews which allow students to review the situation of the company before the Innovation and Transformation journey as well as to consider the challenges that this plan may bring in the future.
